The UCSF team created customized adhesion molecules that bound selected cells in a predictable fashion, giving them control over the body’s regenerative potential. This was a first-of their kind demonstration. “We were able engineer cells in a way that allows us control which cells interact with them and also the nature of that interaction,” stated Wendell Lim (UCSF’s Cell Design Institute director).
